Sculptra Before and After

What Does Sculptra Do?

Sculptra is a cosmetic injectable biostimulant that treats common signs of aging in the face and restores your youthful appearance. Technically, Sculptra isn’t a filler. Sculptra uses poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA), which is a synthetic substance that helps stimulate collagen production. The substance works by stimulating collagen under the skin to create volume, plumping the skin naturally, which contributes to its natural-looking results.

When Dr. Phong injects Sculptra underneath the uppermost layer of skin, it fills in the areas by constructing and reinforcing the collagen near the injection site. It replaces the collagen that has been lost to correct folds and wrinkles for a smoother complexion.

Sculptra Treatment Areas

Sculptra is designed to treat wrinkles, folds, and volume loss primarily on the face. Below are common treatment areas and conditions Sculptra is used to treat:

  • Smile Lines
  • Marionette Lines
  • Chin Wrinkles
  • Pre-Jowl Fold
  • Corners of the Mouth
  • Hollow Temples

Sculptra FAQ

You may need up to 3 Sculptra treatment sessions to achieve your cosmetic desires. Typically, these sessions are spaced about 2 to 4 weeks apart, which means the timeline to achieve your desired results can be anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks.

If you want to correct skin tone, generally, you may only need 1 to 2 treatments, but treating signs of aging will more than likely require at least three treatment sessions.

Yes, like most cosmetic fillers, Sculptra will restore your youthful appearance by targeting the signs of aging on your face. In most cases, you’ll be able to see the results from your injection almost immediately.

While it is mostly uncommon, Sculptra can migrate locally, so it’s very important not to massage the area more than recommended. Most doctors recommend massaging Sculptra after injections in a 5/5/5 method. This method outlines that you should massage your Sculptra for five days, five times a day, and for 5 minutes each time.

Yes, Sculptra and other dermal fillers like it are able to treat jowls. When Dr. Phong injects Sculptra around the jawline and mouth, it smooths your jowls and recreates definition in the affected areas. A Sculptra treatment can easily treat this sign of aging and return a youthful appearance to your face.

If you’re looking to rejuvenate your facial volume or address the signs of aging on your face, then Sculptra may be worth it to you. If you’re over 18, not pregnant or breastfeeding, and have realistic cosmetic goals, Sculptra can reinvigorate your facial features to restore your lost volume and give you the natural-looking appearance you desire.

The Sculptra Procedure

Prior to your procedure, Dr. Phong recommends that you stop taking any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Before injection, Dr. Phong will sanitize the injection site to avoid any infection. With this type of injection, local anesthetics aren’t often necessary; generally, there is minimal discomfort from the injection. However, Sculptra is also mixed with lidocaine to minimize any discomfort.

The procedure itself shouldn’t take more than an hour, and the length of your specific procedure is determined by the number of injections you need to address your treatment area. Depending upon your treatment goals, Dr. Phong will do as many small injections as necessary.

Sculptra Dosage

Typically, Sculptra dosages are determined based on the injection site or the goal of treatment. Below are the common dosages you can expect based on those criteria:

Smile Lines – 1 to 2 syringes (going from vial to syringes?)

Marionette lines – 1 to 3 syringes

Corners of the mouth – 1 to 3 syringes

Pre-jowl fold – 1 to 3 syringes

Chin Wrinkles – 1 to 2 syringes

Temples – 2 to 4 vials

Recovery

Sculptra injections have almost no required downtime after the cosmetic treatment, and most people immediately go about their day as normal. That said, Dr. Phong recommends a few aftercare steps to ensure you achieve the best results possible:

  • Use Ice packs to reduce swelling and mild bruising at the injection site. Be sure to avoid applying the ice directly to the skin.
  • Get a face massage. The 5/5/5 method, which means doing a 5-minute circular massage five times a day for the five days after each treatment, ensures the Sculptra is evenly distributed.
  • Avoid excessive UV sun exposure, which can be bad for the skin and collagen production.
  • Be careful with any additional cosmetic procedures, like chemical peels, because these can cause inflammation. In addition, these procedures can also cause other complications if your skin hasn’t healed after your Sculptra treatment.

Results

Like other cosmetic dermal fillers, the body will naturally metabolize Sculptra, which contributes to the results fading away over time. Generally, you can expect your results to last at least two years, and in some cases, up to 5. Since Sculptra stimulates collagen production, you can expect to see results within one to two months.

If you want to extend the lifespan of your Sculptra treatments, there are a few steps you can take, including:

  • Wear sunscreen – SPF of at least 35 will protect your skin from UV-C rays that damage collagen.
  • Avoid Tobacco – Nicotine, in any form, can weaken the skin, which can cause it to become saggy, wrinkled, or cause your skin to lose volume.
  • Avoid excessive alcohol consumption – dehydration as a result of alcohol consumption can damage the skin, cause collagen production to slow, and cause your skin to lose its nutrients.
  • Prioritize a Healthy Diet – Proteins, fruits, and garlic are all necessary foods to have in your diet to increase the lifespan of your Sculptra results. These foods support your collagen production and prevent it from breaking down.

Comparable Cosmetic Procedures

Sculptra vs. Radiesse

Both Sculptra and Radiesse are biostimulants that treat the loss of volume, wrinkles, folds, and other signs of aging in the face without any downtime. That said, results from Radiesse tend to appear much quicker since Sculptra doesn’t contribute to the added volume of the treatment but instead stimulates collagen growth which results in added volume. Sculptra injections encourage collagen production and take up to two months to see the final results.

Sculptra can last up to 24 months, while Radiesse can last up to a year.

Sculptra vs. Restylane

When comparing Restylane and Sculptra, Restylane offers immediate results and is better for more specific areas, superficial treatments, and thinner areas like below the eyes and near the lips. Sculptra, which is a biostimulant, stimulates collagen production, which means results will take longer to appear but will last longer.

To achieve your desired results, Sculptra will require between 2 and 4 treatment sessions. Restylane will only require 1 or 2 sessions but will require follow-up maintenance and offer results that don’t last as long compared to Sculptra.

A typical Restylane treatment costs between $300-$800, whereas a Sculptra treatment can cost anywhere from $800 to $2,400.

Sculptra vs. Juvederm

Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid filler that fills the desired area with a gel-like substance to provide nearly immediate volume and lift. However, Juvederm does not stimulate collagen production, and since it’s hyaluronic acid, the body will naturally metabolize Juvederm much faster than Sculptra which uses poly-l-lactic acid.
